Star Wars Uncut

After a long time without even thinking about reviewing movies, I was suddenly, blessed with watching one of the best masterpieces I have ever seen. Star Wars Uncut is fan based remake of the massive hit “Star Wars: A New Hope” in which contributers from all over the world, recorded short 15 second segments which were expertly stitched together to form the final gem. The brainchild of Casey Pugh, this project of epic proportion took only a year to create and with a simply mind blowing budget of $0 what has been achieved is simply mind blowing.

For those of you who have just crawled out from under your rock, let me remind you of the basic story of Star Wars. Big war, good vs bad. Young hero thrust into the heart of the action with two witty android sidekicks. Avenging the death of his close family members...

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The current trend for rebooting films has finally come full circle and we’re now treated to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a film that will mark the second time the Planet of the Apes series has been done over. The first attempt was the notoriously bad Tim Burton remake of the original which, although financially successful was critically panned. This put the planned sequel on the backburner and the franchise has remained in something of a limbo and now the whole cycle has started again with a film that seems to have created a whole new set of continuity, ignoring almost all the plot points from the late Apes films and just keeping the bare bones of the original.

The plot here is that James Franco is a scientist working for the Gensys Corporation and attempting to develop a cure to...

Green Lantern

Following on from the success of numerous comic book movie adaptations, it was only a matter of time before the Green Lantern corps hit our screens. Based around the story of the first human Green Lantern recruit, the plot follows Hal Jordan, a test pilot, who is chosen to replace the dying alien Abin Sur. At first, Hal is a bit hesitant about fulfilling his new found role in the universe, but inevitably, he is persuaded to fight for team will against team fear in the ultimate battle or good vs. evil!

The film kicks off well and follows the general comic story as best it can, introducing us to the main Lanterns and giving us a basic insight into what is going on. The embodiment of fear itself, named Parallax, has escaped from his imprisonment and is charging around the universe whooping everyones ass. The Green...

Battle: Los Angeles

Battle: Los Angeles is the latest high budget alien invasion film to come out of Hollywood. It’s starring cast and different approach to the classic tale made it a very appealing release but with a director relatively inexperienced out with the horror scene, this always had the potential to be another so close yet so far fairytale. Having said that, I went to view this full of excitement and with high expectation. It is one of my favorite genres and although not everyone will agree, I actually liked Liebesman’s Texas Chainsaw and really hoped he could pull...

Gnomeo and Juliette

Right so let me get this straight. Here we have a film, largely financed by Elton John, featuring almost all of his back catalogue of music,  has a cast that includes pretty much every British actor in the history of the world including Ozzy Osbourne and a cameo from Hulk Hogan (WTF?) and is a bastardisation of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies retooled to reach the ‘family audience’. How does this thing not suck?

In the main, this can be attributed to the confident direction of Kelly Asbury. Having previously taken the reins of Shrek...

Duke Nukem Forever

YES!! YES!! YESS!! IT’S HERE!! IT’S HERE!! THIS IS GOING TO BE SO TOTALLY AWSOME!!!

That was what I was thinking when Duke Nukem Forever came through the letter box. I’d been waiting for 13 years, kept track of all the promises and problems and like so many people at one point or another excepted the truth, that there will be no Duke Nukem Forever. Even through the lead up to release there was always doubt. And all that vanished when game was in my hands.

The story is as simple. “Aliens come to Earth, Duke is sent to kill aliens”. However a more in depths description...
