Star Wars Uncut

After a long time without even thinking about reviewing movies, I was suddenly, blessed with watching one of the best masterpieces I have ever seen. Star Wars Uncut is fan based remake of the massive hit “Star Wars: A New Hope” in which contributers from all over the world, recorded short 15 second segments which were expertly stitched together to form the final gem. The brainchild of Casey Pugh, this project of epic proportion took only a year to create and with a simply mind blowing budget of $0 what has been achieved is simply mind blowing.

For those of you who have just crawled out from under your rock, let me remind you of the basic story of Star Wars. Big war, good vs bad. Young hero thrust into the heart of the action with two witty android sidekicks. Avenging the death of his close family members and fighting for good he leads the team to victory in the epic finale. Boy becomes hero, shares a kiss with his (unknown until the next movie) twin sister and the...

Gnomeo and Juliette

Right so let me get this straight. Here we have a film, largely financed by Elton John, featuring almost all of his back catalogue of music,  has a cast that includes pretty much every British actor in the history of the world including Ozzy Osbourne and a cameo from Hulk Hogan (WTF?) and is a bastardisation of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies retooled to reach the ‘family audience’. How does this thing not suck?

In the main, this can be attributed to the confident direction of Kelly Asbury. Having previously taken the reins of Shrek 2, it’s clear that he knows exactly how to handle parodies without being too heavy handed. It would have been extremely easy for this film to descend into a stupid slapstick parody only aimed at kids and boring everyone else to tears, but instead the jokes end up being evenly paced and even when the jokes misfire (which is infrequent) there’s always a funnier line coming up shortly to...

The Green Hornet

To say The Green Hornet had a troubled production history would be an understatement. Originally mooted in 1992 and based on a radio serial created by George W. Trendle (creator of the Lone Ranger), the film has passed through several stars (including, but not restricted to, George Clooney, Jason Scott Lee, Stephen Chow and Jet Li) and numerous directors including Kevin Smith and the aforementioned Stephen Chow. It is in fact Michel Gondry’s second turn in the directors chair after initially being hired to shoot the film as his feature film debut in 1997. Ultimately writing duties ended up at the doorstep of Seth Rogen and frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg with Gondry returning, this time with a whole host of critically acclaimed films already under his belt. Was The Green Hornet worth the 19 year wait?

Rogen stars as media mogul Britt Reid by day, Green Hornet by night,...

Tangled

Tangled, the latest animated tale to come out of those famous studios, is a fast paced adventure following the life of Rapunzel. As with so many Disney movies, this tale has very little resemblance to the famous children’s story from which the writers drew inspiration. The well known German fable has been completely torn apart, out with the old, in with the new and in all honesty, they couldn’t have done a better job. This is Disney at their best.

Without delving into too much detail, the basic Disney plot is still in place. Princess (Rapunzel) meets Prince charming (Flynn Rider) and after an epic journey (both physically and spiritually) they fall in love and live happily ever after. Boring you say? No. This movie, although classically Disney, is so very modern and perfect for today’s world. Tangled is a fun, fast paced, exciting story with modern twists and quirky jokes at every corner. The characters are very well designed and every single one seems to fit so naturally...

Shrek Forever After

Since his first appearance in 2001, Shrek has become one of the most recognisable and funny characters in the animation genre. The first two instalments in the franchise were utterly hilarious yet when Shrek the Third hit the screens in 2007 it looked like Shrek had died a utterly painful death. Upon hearing about this latest and last release I was more than willing to avoid seeing it at all costs. I was wrong. The classic Shrek we all know and love is back!

Following on from the third movie, we are quickly reminded abut Shrek’s now peaceful life. Looking after his three kids and caring for his wife, whilst maintaining the family swamp, Shrek begins to enter a bit of a mid life crisis. Deeply missing his “terrifying ogre” days he finally snaps and shows his true background by ruining his triplets first birthday party. After meeting one Rumpelstiltskin, he is sucked into a deal which will give him...
